Fidalgo makes Champions League debut as Real Betis come from behind against Lille

Mexican international Álvaro Fidalgo had a memorable night when he replaced Isco in the 60th minute during Real Betis’ opening Champions League match of the 2026-27 season. He played a part in the hosts’ comeback victory over Lille. The former Club América midfielder continues to be part of coach Manuel Pellegrini’s rotation plans. It was Fidalgo’s second consecutive appearance of the new campaign and his first in the Champions League. The 2026-born player had featured in the Europa League last season, making this his second European competition. Although Fidalgo’s performance was not flashy, his presence helped Betis keep their midfield rhythm in the closing stages. A congested fixture list makes squad rotation crucial for the Andalusian club. According to the schedule, Real Betis will host Porto at Benito Villamarín on October 14 in the next Champions League round. Lille will travel to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on October 13. Before those fixtures, Betis face Villarreal, Getafe, Deportivo La Coruña and Osasuna in LaLiga, while Lille meet Troyes, Nice and Le Havre in Ligue 1. It will be a test of squad depth for both clubs.
